Back In Town

Just leave me here...
I believe that it's important once in a while to take a hiatus from the unending duties of animal husbandry and take part in other facets of human existence. The parts that include spending hours reading novels on a beach and floating in perfect solitude in the ocean, letting previously repressed ideas bubble up at will, mulling over the mysteries of life in between waves. It's vital for a person to spend hours or even days trading stories with loved ones over a cold beer or glass of wine, laughing until one's belly hurts. I stand firmly by the essential practice of simply existing every once in a while.

So that's what I've been doing over the past nine days. While I like to think Dino misses me while I'm gone, I hold no delusions that he longs to go back to work when I return. He also adores his Food Lady at Orchard Hill, and she spoils him rotten, once in a while letting him graze without his muzzle for an hour or so like a grandmother sliding a child a second helping of cake with a conspiratorial whisper, "Don't tell your mother!"

Nevertheless, I am the brains of this operation, and back to work we must go.

I confess to being a little sad watching my show season slip away before my eyes, with far fewer successes than I imagined we'd have this year. (that 61% and change, however, landed us in 4th place out of 12) But, there isn't much I can do about it aside from putting my nose back to the grindstone.

Since I've gotten back we've put two rides in, and we both feel like we've had over a week off. Relaxed, but definitely not sharp. And one of us has a great tan. I hope to get a lesson in this week to put us back on track, and may go to the last weekday night dressage show at the horse park just for the heck of it. We'll see. For now, I'm just trying to ease myself back into real life as painlessly as possible.
