An Experiment

You may have noticed that Dino has wicked rubs on his face from his grazing muzzle.

Plz to eat your phone?

Grumpy pony has rubs :(

For a horse with Cushing's, a grazing muzzle is a necessary evil, and until recently I resigned myself to accepting the rubs and giving up on ever having a rub-free muzzle experience.

That is until I noticed that one of my client's horses all wore grazing muzzles, and all had perfect, rub-free faces.

I had to know her secret.

And that secret, apparently, is the Tough1 Easy Breathe Grazing Muzzle. It has a wider, shallower fit than most other muzzles, is lighter weight, and has big nostril-holes in it. It looked promising. So I ordered one.

And it finally came!
Muzzle not pictured on pony because my model was being rather uncooperative.

Now begins the Great Muzzle Experiment of 2014.

Wish us luck.

  1. Nice! I was thinking of adding some sort of soft lining around Shy's muzzle, but I didn't want anything that would stick to it.
But buying that seems much more logical than trying to sew or some other domestic thing I am sure to suck at. :)

    1. It wasn't too expensive either; about $30 including shipping from horseloverz! The sizing is a little funny though, Dino usually wears a cob size halter but we went with the "pony" size in this muzzle and it seems to fit well. If you try it, let me know how you like it and we can compare notes!

    1. I was going to say, chat with the owner of Connor's full brother Nicole at Equipilot.blogspot.com. She's the queen of grazing muzzles, and I believe uses moleskin on hers. If not, I've heard of it helping on CoTH for sure. Hope it helps!

    2. I will definitely give that a try if the new muzzle doesn't perform as I hoped! He is just such an aggressive grazer that he shoves the edge of the muzzle up into his face when he eats, and doesn't really care that it rubs him raw. THANKFULLY his rubs are NOT raw this time around, just hairless.
