Eventers: What's Under Your Show Coat?

My little hunter princess heart just can't get away from this look..
As the beginning of show season gets closer, I'm taking mental inventory of my gear and deciding what might need upgrading this year, and what is working just fine for us. Overall, I have pretty much everything I need at this point, but I've come to the realization that I own exactly one show shirt, and it's very, very huntery.

I also realized that I honestly have no clue what's "in" or appropriate to wear under your jacket for eventing, whether it's for the dressage or show jumping phase, and that there seem to be a LOT more options out there that are not my tried-and-true hunter/jumper white tone-on-tone patterned, button-down, long sleeved show shirt with a collar.

So, what do you wear under your show coat? Long or short sleeves? If you wear short sleeves, does the lining of your jacket stick to your sweaty arms and make you wildly uncomfortable? Is this not an issue with the newfangled 'tech' fabric jackets?  (I am a traditionalist, and my show coat is a lightweight wool blend with a satin lining. So sue me.) Does your eyeball twitch a little bit if there isn't 1/2" of sleeve sticking out from the cuffs of your coat? (Mine does) Do you do a snap collar? Quarter zip? Does it even matter, because stock ties are a thing?

Please educate me.

  1. honestly? usually some sort of sporty or technical material white shirt with a zip up collar. i have a long sleeve from smartpak and a sleeveless from marshalls.... the collar gets covered by my stock tie anyway, and my jacket sleeves are so long that trying for the 'white cuff' look usually wouldn't really work anyway. it ain't fancy but it works for me!

    1. the sleeveless - does it have a stock tie loop? or do you find that you don't need those?

I want a sleeveless one so I can wear it under my purple coat IN ALL SEASONS.

    2. i've actually never had a shirt with a stock tie loop, but the tie usually stays in place anyway. with an old hunt coat and collar from my ihsa days, i would safety pin the collar in place tho

  2. Come to the dark side! Dover makes great prices tech long sleeve shirts with mesh on the under sleeve. Zip up the collar and toss on a stock tie!! So much more comfortable!!

  3. I'm not an eventer but I like long sleeved show shirts because otherwise you get that super excellent lobster red farmer tan shit and no.

Plus I have a mesh tech coat.

  4. I had such a long, well thought out reply and then Blogspot ate it so this is my second try and it will probably suck considerably more. BUT, I was trying to say... I much prefer long sleeves. Mostly because seeing bare wrists with no cuffs makes me slightly twitchy, but also because like Aimee said - sunburn. I wear long sleeve shirts 90% of the time when I'm riding anyway. I do dressage in a stock tie but I showjump without it (because I'll be honest I hate stock ties), so I like having fun details on my shirts that make them a little more unique and interesting. My Mrs Tutton's shirt has the navy faux leather on the collar, my Winston Vienna has some navy trim, etc. I'd loooove to have the Cavalleria Toscana shirt with the lace on the collar but have not coughed up the money yet. I also have a SHL tech shirt with navy elbow patches that is my favorite to wear when coats are waived. Because elbow patches. A plain white shirt just makes my little detail-loving heart so sad. I think RJ Classics is making some cool shirts now that are pretty affordably priced. But if you're into plain white, the Kastel's would be my choice. At least they're not hot, and they're pretty cheap.

  5. I have a lace show shirt that's kinda tech-fabric-y and a more traditional shirt. This year I think I'm going to start rocking one of my many, many Kastels that I got on sale last year. Like Emma said, the collar zipper will be hidden by the tie!

  6. I'm with Emma, I wear something technical with my stock tie for dressage. For stadium I tend to wear my lace Aztec Diamond shirt because it's pretty :) One thing to note, if jackets are waived you cannot have a sleeveless shirt. So I always wear a short sleeved shirt at the very least.

  7. I wear a long sleeve tech fabric shirt under my coat most of the time, because that's what I own, haha! (And I have them for hunting!) One of them is a white Essex Classics snap-button shirt (with pearl snaps because of course) and one is a color-blocked deal by Equine Couture (http://www.breeches.com/ladies/apparel/show-shirts/equine-couture-ladies-sawyer-show-shirt.html). I prefer the Equine Couture one- I like the fit, and I always get a lot of compliments on it when people see it when coats are waived!

  8. I typically ride in a white Ariat sun shirt underneath my jacket. Stock tie for dressage, take it off for stadium. Mine has a snap collar. I like long sleeve better because my jacket doesn't stick to my bare arms and if they waive jackets, then I'm good to go. I live in NC and most of my events are in SC, so May-September can be miserable and I'll do whatever I can to be semi-comfortable.

  9. I have this one and I love it:

The material covers well, but light and breathable, and I'm a big fan of the magnet in the collar, also the sleeves that roll up. I wear it like that after my rides, so it sort of does double duty as a show shirt under my coat and a not-embarrassed to-be-seen-in shirt afterwards. My only critique would be I think the sizing runs large and the price is crazy if you don't wait for a good sale.

  10. I have a variety of white tech shirts, from long sleeve, short sleeve, and sleeveless. All work fine depending on what coat I am wearing and the weather. The biggest thing to think about for me, is that for any show you need to pack one that would be acceptable if coats are waived (if you live in a place where that might happen). If you have a brightly colored shirt, or something sleeveless, then ditching the coat will not be an option. Just something to think about.

  11. ooh great topic! I never know what to wear either!! I have a couple tech shirts and a few others but most times for my dressage i wear my old hunter ratcatcher with the regular collar since I dont even own a stock tie! I do have a couple techy coats I do love (one is black and one is that gorgeous blue color (Thank you the900facebookpony for never steering me wrong) they wear wonderfully and keep you warm if it is cold and vice versa if it is hot as balls :) Now to go read all these responses!! YAY PS I dont do sleeveless (50 plus old lady arms even though I lift weights at gym they are still jiggly and as others say SUNBURN even up here).

    1. It is legitimately overwhelming! Especially as a reformed h/j rider, wherein there is basically one choice of shirt. I have no idea what is appropriate in dressage/eventingland. These responses have been so helpful!!

  13. I wore a TS Icefil shirt under my jacket at shows. Stock tie covered the blue and when coats were waived no one even cared.
