PONY'TUDE Gets Cookin'

Because of Dino's various and sundry metabolic issues, he can't have most "normal" horse treats. The high sugar content of treats and horse cookies made with oats, molasses, sugar, peppermints, and starchy flours make them a no-no for him.

So, because I love to cook, and because I've already successfully made dog biscuits for my canine friends, I decided to give horse treats a whirl.

I decided on a base of brown rice flour and creamy peanut butter. Brown rice has less starch most other grains, so it's a "safe" food for metabolically-challenged horses like Dino, and the high fat content of peanuts make them a good choice for him as well, similar to his favorite sunflower seed snack. Unfortunately I didn't have any sunflower seeds in the house when I embarked on this venture, otherwise I would have stirred in some of those, too, but I can always try that next time! If you try these treats for a Cushing's/IR/metabolic horse, be sure to use NATURAL peanut butter with NO sugar!

These cookies come out very soft and chewy, if your furry friends like a crunchier snack, just bake them longer! Dino and Max HIGHLY recommend them.

Max & Dino's Chewy Peanut Butter Cookies

1 C Brown Rice Flour
1/2-3/4 C Warm Water
2 Heaping T Peanut Butter

Preheat oven to 375, and grease a cookie sheet. Mix ingredients in a large bowl until they form a dough, adding as much water as is needed. If the dough is a bit sticky, you can add more flour, or just chill in the fridge for a bit to make it easier to handle. Roll the dough into 1in balls, and then flatten slightly with your fingers to form little discs, and place on the cookie sheet. Remember, these treats have no leavening agents, so they won't spread at all, you can pack them in tight! Bake for 20 mins. Let treats cool, then feed to the dogs and horses in your life!
