Making Time For Fun

In riding, as any aspect of life, it's easy to get caught up in working all the time.

Those who know me well know that I'm a bit of a perfectionist. If I do something at all, it's got to be done well, otherwise why bother? I take the same approach to riding, and lately both Dino and I have been frustrated with this too-much-work-not-enough-fun approach. I've been pushing both of us pretty hard, and decided that we needed a break!

So yesterday I hopped on with the intent of just having FUN. Dino and I moseyed around the farm, walking through the paddocks, up and down the hills, and around the barns with absolutely no agenda. We trotted around the outside of the round pen, during which time what I thought was a really deep stretch was actually Dino grazing while trotting. Apparently this is possible. I asked him for a little canter and as we circled the round pen I felt a huge smile start to creep across my face. Dino was happy, I was happy, this was FUN!

And at the end of the day, fun is what riding is all about!

  1. Those rides are the best! I can't wait until I can put a few more rides on my mare so I can find a field to canter in. :)

    1. It's one of my all-time favourite feelings. Right now, however, she thinks cantering in a field = bucking, haha.
